Roktowa

The derelict old Red Stripe Brewery on Pechon Street has long been emblematic of Downtown Kingston‘s urban decay – as Jamaica’s Observer described it: “a prominent edifice whose derelict façade has beaten it into something morosely unobtrusive, largely present, but hardly noticed anymore.”

All this changed when artist Melinda Brown moved into building, re-imagining it as the headquarters of ROKTOWA, a new art urban community that taps into the collective intelligence of the downtown streets to create a project that is at once experimental, informal, collective, brave and yes, utopian.

We visit the artistic republic of Roktowa, exploring the neighborhood that it calls home, its self-determined working models and real and imaginary spaces it opens up.
