The Boys Are Doin’ It by Olufemi Terry

Article Brief

Pan-African Stars P-Square
Nigerian auto-tuned boy-band P-Square are a phenomenon – they’ve garnered an international fan base from Jos to Joburg, Abuja to America, played the world, sharing the stage with everyone from Ginuwine, to Sean Paul, Akon and Busola Keshiro, sold millions (2007′s Game Over has sold 8 million copies globally), caused a stir with their blatant “sampadelica”, taken on the colonialism still haunting the music industry (“I don’t know why, anytime a foreign artiste comes to Nigeria, they (show organizers) wanna treat us like slaves in our country”) and most recently nabbed the Artist of the Year Award at the KORA All Africa Music Awards in Ouagadougou.

We track their roots back to the border-crossing sounds of 70s high-life one-hit-wonder Prince Nico Mbarga, exploring how the duo have taken over the mantle of “pan-African stars” which has been dormant since Olomide dropped it in the 90s. After 30yrs of Nigerians pretending there was no music coming out of Kin, Douala and Abidjan – P-Square embraced the sound, generic and infectious.
