Independent community newspapers

Up until 1994, South Africa had a thriving alternative press comprising community broadsheets, bilingual weeklies and even student “zines” and xeroxed samizdats. After the elections, funding and support for such ventures dried up.

In recent years the lack of transformation in the mainstream press and its lack of credibility amongst many communities has lead to a resurgence of interest in alternative forms of news gathering.

These days community papers such Skawara News a rural newspapers in the Chris Hani District a provide a voice for the people where the mainstream media has failed. We focus in on several publications and explore their strategies: multi-lingual, community driven news, cheap reproduction, alternative distribution etc
