Expulsion Orders Redux

In early 1985 the Buhari government ordered “illegal immigrants” living in Nigeria, most of them Ghanaians numbering hundreds of thousands, to leave the country. That expulsion order gave them till May 10, 1985 to leave.

Exactly 23 years after the expiration of that Buhari expulsion order, we reengage the space. Speaking from the point of view of young a victim of the expulsion order, writing from a now-relatively-prosperous Ghana, we examine the xenophobic crisis in South Africa, and generally on the African continent, probing our ongoing obsession with border control and impure bodies of our neighbors.
