African coaches

Cairo, Egypt: A symposium on the technical aspects of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana was held in Cairo in May to evaluate what happened. The objective of the star-filled workshop was to review the 26th Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana and also identify key challenges in the pursuit of developing African football.

We use the conference as an entry point to looking at football coaching in Africa. Current debates on the African coaches tend focus on expatriate coaches as ‘a colonial throwback’ (see http://mg.co.za/article/2011-04-01-expatriate-coaches-a-colonial-throwback/). We sidestep that debate to look at the practice of coaching in Africa: who are the continents best coaches? what are their methods? their challenges and success?
